Biden: Remember to “Touch Ground” when Trump Attacks

Biden did well — but can do better — at what the NY Times observed after his first debate: “…avoiding the chum that Mr. Trump was tossing into the debate water. Instead, he kept turning — physically — to face the cameras and address the American people instead of his chattering rival.” He did this much of the time, but still, too often lost his center and was drawn into Trumps “chum.”

To stay above this, he should always think of the Buddha’s iconic “touch ground” gesture. While seeking enlightenment under the bodhi tree, an army of demonic forces massed and threatened to unseat him in seeking the throne of enlightenment, demanding proof of his righteousness. He simply touched the ground, calling on the Spirit of the Earth to bear witness— at which the demonic legions dissolved.

In the same way, Biden should shrug off the distractions of Trump’s calls to the gutter by simply turning to the People — inviting them to bear witness to his righteous dedication to American values.

The only valid criticisms in Biden’s performance were when he fought back at Trump instead of simply turning to the people to bear witness to his righteousness. When he turned to the American people, his virtue was clear, and Trump was left to box with his own shadow — to be seen as no more than the demonic windbag that he is.

Some have pointed to similar folk wisdom: “never wrestle a pig in the mud — you both get dirty and the pig loves it” or “never argue with a fool — people may not see the difference.” Yes, but more than that — Biden can go high. Let the American people see for themselves who is righteous and who is a pretender. Trust in that force — call on the soul of America to bear witness.
